OVERCOMING CHALLENGES OF CONSTRUCTION IN NIGERIA

Like many countries around the world, Nigeria also faces numerous challenges in achieving sustainable construction practices. The construction sector in the nation has faced a multitude of problems, which includes substandard materials and workmanship, insufficient safety standards, and widespread corruption.

CHALLENGES OF CONSTRUCTION IN NIGERIA

One of the main challenges facing Nigeria’s construction industry is a significant obstacle due to inadequate regulations and enforcement mechanisms. Although there are laws and regulations in place to guide building practices; their implementation and enforcement are often lax, leading to substandard structure work and practices. This has resulted in a high rate of building collapses and other safety hazards, as well as environmental degradation due to the use of unsustainable building materials and practices.

Another challenge facing the industry is the lack of access to affordable and sustainable building materials. Many of the building materials currently used in Nigeria are imported, making them expensive and often not sustainable. This has led to a situation where low-income households have limited access to safe and affordable housing, exacerbating the country’s housing deficit.

In addition, a shortage of qualified labor, which is necessary for the implementation of sustainable building practices; frequently characterizes Nigeria’s construction sector. The workforce in the building industry largely comprises of; unskilled laborers who lack the technical expertise to implement sustainable building practices, resulting in limited adoption of sustainable building techniques and materials despite their benefits.

Despite these challenges, there are several initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable construction in Nigeria. For example, there has been an increase in the use of alternative building materials such as compressed earth blocks; bamboo, and other locally sourced materials. Their implementation has the potential to improve the quality and affordability of housing in Nigeria; as they are more sustainable and cost-effective than traditional building materials.

Furthermore, there is a need for greater collaboration between stakeholders in the industry. Also, for increased investment in training and capacity building to improve the skills of the workforce and to promote the adoption of sustainable construction practices.
